Although he’s barely a teenager, Maui’s Ian Gentil is quickly becoming one of the most fabled prodigies in recent memory. With the likes of Andy Irons stating that Ian is the best 13-year-old he’s ever seen, Ian’s prowess as the world’s preeminent grom can’t be overstated. A family with international roots—Ian is fluent in Portuguese—the Gentils moved to Maui from Florida where Ian began surfing earnestly at the age of eight. In his short-yet-illustrious career, he has since gathered two national titles and has become one of only three surfers in NSSA history to post two perfect 10s in a single heat at Nationals. He’s got the talent and the hype, now it’s up to Ian to continue to show the world exactly what he’s capable of achieving.
